Artist and world traveller Mark Powell studied fine art, drawing and painting at university, but his latest work is beyond what’s taught in textbooks.
Using only ballpoint pens, Powell decorates vintage maps and envelopes with intricate doodles that feature lifelike qualities.
Powell says he decided to use a biro as his tool because ‘it is the most common tool I can find which means I can show what can be done with such things. I hope it shows what anyone can do. Art supplies are not always needed to create something. I also like the fact that no mistake can be made’.
His main influence is Jean-Michel Basquiat — not because of his drawing style, he says, but ‘the fact he drives me on and pushes me to do something better’.</p…
